Age of Steam

Designed by Martin Wallace and published by Warfrog, Winsome Games, and Eagle Games (Age of Steam), and later by Mayfair Games (Steam), this acclaimed railroad-building game is best suited for 3 to 6 players, ages 12 and up.

Set in the eastern United States, players compete to construct efficient rail networks, laying tracks and delivering goods while navigating tight competition. Strategic planning is key—players must decide when to take loans, how to outmaneuver opponents for the most lucrative deliveries, and when to upgrade their locomotives to stay ahead.

A streamlined version titled Steam was released in 2009, refining the original mechanics. Age of Steam earned several awards, including the 2003 International Gamers Award and the 2002 Meeples Choice Award. It remains one of the top-rated train games on our list.
